Human Rights Campaign Gives Gilead Perfect Score on 2020 Corporate Equality Index

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation this week released its 2020 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), listing Gilead among the companies receiving a 100% rating.

The CEI is an annual national benchmarking tool that assesses companies’ policies, benefits and practices related to LGBTQ employees and their families. The index also scores companies on responsible citizenship and public commitment to LGBTQ+ equality.

The HRC recognized Gilead as one of the foundation’s Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality and awarded the company a perfect score for the third consecutive year.

“We believe all employees deserve to come to a workplace with a sense of belonging as their full and complete selves,” says Dave Kim, Gilead’s Executive Director of Inclusion and Diversity. “Receiving this recognition from the Human Rights Campaign is incredibly meaningful, but we know our work on inclusion and diversity will never be done. Assessing best practices with organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign and continuing to partner with our ERGs will help build inclusion into everything we do.”

In 2019, Gilead was particularly focused on increasing efforts to promote transgender equality. With the partnership of the Pride Alliance – an ERG for LGBTQ employees and allies – the company made adjustments to its practices to better support transitioning employees. Gilead also enhanced the benefits offered to transgender employees to align with the standards of care recommended by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health.

“I’m truly proud to work for a company that is willing to listen to employees and partners, and quickly take meaningful steps to make Gilead and our communities more inclusive,” says Nik Johnson, Senior Director of HIV Community Marketing at Gilead and a global co-lead of the Pride Alliance. “Having that voice and working for an organization that is willing to stand up for the equal rights of all is truly inspiring.”

Gilead has also taken measures to build on its public commitment to LGBTQ equality. In November, Gilead introduced the Transcend Community Impact Fund, a corporate giving program that commits $4.5 million over two years to help fund nonprofit organizations working to elevate best practices and community-led solutions that improve the safety, health and wellness of the U.S. transgender community.
