Gilead Advancing Access®

Our patient and medication assistance proram (PAP/MAP)

At Gilead, our role is to discover, develop and help ensure access to innovative HIV medicines and actively pursue research that could, hopefully, one day, lead to a cure. Our dedication to innovation applies not only to how we approach making medicine, but to how we help ensure those medicines reach those who could benefit.

Our Advancing Access free medication program is guided by the mission of providing free medication to eligible individuals. Since its inception in 2004, Advancing Access has helped more than 250,000 enrollees receive free Gilead medication through our patient and medication assistance programs (PAP/MAP).

Program enrollees can access their prescribed Gilead medication, free of charge, through the method that works best for them. Our robust retail pharmacy network enables enrollees to receive their free medication at their local pharmacy. We are proud to offer both in-pharmacy pickup and overnight mail order options to help facilitate easier access to prescribed medications as part of our free medication program.

The Advancing Access PAP/MAP programs were developed to help facilitate eligible patient access to prescribed treatment and prevention medicines with minimal logistical and administrative burdens. In this way, our programs aim to help overcome the significant social and systemic hurdles that often impede access to medication for people living with HIV or who may benefit from HIV prevention therapy. We continue to evolve our programs to further facilitate patient access to free medication as prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Supporting the Long-term Sustainability of Our Program

Starting January 1, 2022, Gilead began operating Advancing Access with an updated model that stays true to the goals and principles of the program–to provide eligible uninsured individuals in the US with free medication. These changes will support our ability to meet the needs of enrollees for years to come.

Gilead announced the planned program updates in early 2021. Since that time, we regularly met with HIV community representatives about these updates and responded to their feedback by making adjustments to the program and implementation timeline. Guided by input received from HIV community representatives, the new program model retains the convenience of retail pharmacy pickup while adding mail order options for enrollees. We also delayed implementation of these changes to January 2022 based on community feedback.

If you have any questions about program changes or eligibility for Gilead PAP/MAP medication, please call Advancing Access at 1-800-226-2056, Monday through Friday between 9AM and 8PM EST, to speak with a program specialist.

What changes were made to the Advancing Access PAP/MAP?

We continue to operate the Advancing Access free medication program with a new model that stays true to the goals and principles of the program–to provide eligible individuals with free medication.

  • We will reimburse a participating pharmacy dispensing free product in the amount paid for each bottle plus a fair market value dispensing fee and administrative fee.
  • The new program model retains the convenience of retail pharmacy pickup while adding mail order options for enrollees.

Why did Gilead make changes to the Advancing Access PAP/MAP?

The updated model will support the long-term sustainability of the programs and our ability to meet the needs of enrollees for years to come. These changes align to the original intent of our programs–to provide free product to eligible program participants by tying the reimbursement amount to the actual acquisition cost of the product participating pharmacies are dispensing.

How are Gilead and the Advancing Access program helping to address the HIV epidemic?

At Gilead, we recognize free medication is only one aspect of public health. Equitable access to innovative HIV prevention and treatment is essential. That is a fundamental reason why we provide our free medication program to help facilitate eligible individuals' access to their prescribed treatment and prevention medicines with minimal logistical and administrative burdens.

Advancing Access is one of many Gilead-led initiatives aimed at addressing barriers to help end the HIV epidemic as a public health challenge. Gilead continues to be the largest private funder of HIV programs and organizations in the US and actively supports patient advocacy organizations that provide critical services.
