Q: Tell us about your career path. What drew you to your field?

I’ve worked in human resources for more than 20 years. HR has been a rewarding career for me. I learned quickly that I could combine strategy, problem solving and engagement with people in one discipline. Each day is different, and I appreciate the complexity.

Q: Why did you choose Gilead?

Gilead’s Core Values resonated with my personal journey, and I was impressed to see that Inclusion is one of those values. It was a bold one to include, and I was intrigued to learn more. I also enjoyed engaging with the team members during my interview. They were honest about the opportunities and clear about the end goal to build a better HR team. I like challenges, and I was confident I could make a positive impact drawing from my past experiences and leadership strengths.

Q: How would you describe the company’s culture?

Gilead’s vision is to create a healthier world for all people. I believe we help improve people’s quality of life through our medical breakthroughs. You can’t do this kind of work without keeping people at the forefront, and Gilead’s focus starts with its employees. I am proud of how we responded to the pandemic as an HR organization by offering mental health days and additional childcare support, as well as encouraging people to think about work in different ways.

Q: Tell us about a time you really felt the impact of your work

Leading our initiative to hire people of diverse backgrounds has been rewarding. We’ve been able to make significant strides by building relationships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Hispanic Serving Institutions, in addition to engaging new diversity suppliers and increasing the priority we place on identifying and hiring diverse talent.

Q: What do the company’s efforts to prioritize equity, inclusion and diversity mean to you?

This is very personal to me because it’s something I work on every day. Part of my role in recruiting new employees to Gilead is to help people understand why this is a great place to be. It’s easy to do when I can lead with the work that’s happening and the significant changes we are making when it comes to inclusion and diversity. We’re leading with action and not just words.
