At Gilead, we recognize that people with chronic diseases often face challenges that scientific discovery alone cannot solve. Through our partnerships and approach to philanthropy, we support initiatives and programs that help access to care, reduce disparities, improve education and better our local communities.
Gilead’s comprehensive strategy to support communities that are disproportionally impacted by diseases aligned with our therapeutic areas of focus includes addressing the social and structural factors that fuel epidemics.
The Gilead TRANScend Community Impact Fund builds on this commitment and will support Trans-led organizations working to improve the safety, health and wellness of the Transgender community.
Transgender people are disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that:
- Fourteen percent of all Transgender women are living with HIV, with Black and Latina Transgender women even more impacted or at risk.1
- An estimated 44% of Black/African American Transgender women, 26% of Hispanic/Latina Transgender women, and 7% of white Transgender women have HIV. 2
- In 2017, Transgender people were three times more likely to receive a new HIV diagnosis than the national average.3
- About half of Transgender HIV diagnoses from 2009-14 were of people living in the Southern U.S.4
The Transgender community is resilient, but to achieve true health equity, we must tackle the underlying factors that are fueling the epidemic.
In 2018, Gilead convened an Advisory Board with experts and community advocates from Transgender advocacy and healthcare organizations to more deeply understand the greatest needs of the Transgender community.

The TRANScend Community Impact Fund aims to elevate best practices and community-led solutions that improve the safety, health and wellness of the Transgender community. TRANScend supports strategic program development, capacity building and implementation of direct services for Transgender communities with $4.5 million over two years to community organizations, 87% of which are Trans-led.
