The United Kingdom has made significant strides in tackling HIV, however a gender gap in care still exists. Women make up a third of the people living with HIV in the UK, yet they’re often overlooked in testing, prevention and care – which can lead to late diagnoses and poorer health outcomes.
To help address this, a Gilead team partnered with Sophia Forum – a leading women’s HIV community-based organization – to raise public awareness and advocate for change. Together, the team produced a UK-based policy report and the Women & HIV campaign to amplify the voices of UK women from various backgrounds that are affected by HIV.
“There’s a lack of understanding and knowledge about HIV,” says Husseina, a community HIV advocate featured in the campaign. She hopes her story, and others like hers, will bring urgency to the issue and empower other women to seek care.
Since the Woman & HIV campaign launched earlier this year, it has reached communities through events at the UK Parliament, major HIV conferences and social media, and linked individuals to UK-based resources. Now entering its second phase, the campaign will focus on increasing awareness to testing, prevention and care in the communities most affected.
