Gilead Supports the PARTNERS Trial to Advance Research on Potential Treatments for Ebola Virus Disease

Foster City, Calif., July 2, 2026 – The World Health Organization (WHO) today announced the launch of the PARTNERS (Platform Adaptive Randomized Trial for New and Repurposed Filovirus TreatmentS) trial, a landmark international study evaluating potential treatments for Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD), a type of ebolavirus, during the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda.

Gilead Sciences is supporting the trial by donating an initial shipment of more than 2,000 vials of its intravenous antiviral therapy, remdesivir, for investigational use in the study. This contribution is in addition to Gilead's recent donation of remdesivir for emergency use to the Republic of Uganda to support the outbreak response.

"The launch of the PARTNERS trial represents an important step toward generating the evidence needed to determine how to treat Bundibugyo virus disease," said Anu Osinusi, MD, Vice President, Clinical Development, Virology at Gilead Sciences. "The data generated through the PARTNERS trial has the potential to strengthen future outbreak responses, improve outcomes for people affected by BVD, and inform future strategies for other filovirus infections."

Gilead has a long-standing commitment to supporting global response efforts to emerging infectious diseases, including filovirus outbreaks in Africa. Over the past decade, remdesivir has been donated for emergency use, compassionate use programs and clinical research in response to multiple Ebola, Sudan, and Marburg virus outbreaks across Sub-Saharan Africa. Gilead continues to work closely with WHO, governments and public health partners to support coordinated outbreak response efforts where its expertise and medicines can be deployed most effectively.

Remdesivir has demonstrated promising preclinical activity across multiple filoviruses but has not been approved for the treatment of filovirus disease in any country, including Ebola and Marburg virus disease. The safety and efficacy of remdesivir for these uses, including the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus, have not yet been established.

About Remdesivir

Remdesivir is a nucleotide analog prodrug invented and developed by Gilead, building on more than a decade of the company’s antiviral research. Remdesivir has broad-spectrum antiviral activity both in vitro and in animal models against multiple viral pathogens, including Marburg, Ebola, SARS, MERS and SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Remdesivir has been approved as a COVID-19 treatment in approximately 50 countries worldwide. To date, remdesivir has been made available to more than 14.5 million patients around the world, including more than 8.1 million people in middle- and low-income countries through Gilead’s voluntary licensing program.

The clinical efficacy of remdesivir for BVD remains to be established. Remdesivir is currently not approved in any country for the treatment of BVD.
